The Spirit of Russia

Discover the Russians this week on primephonic, from the nationalist Mighty Handful to Tchaikovsky who was the first to make his mark in the West, through to Stravinsky’s exploration of neo-nationalism in his early ballets, nationalism around the World War I era, neo-classicism and everything in between.

It all started with a new wave of Russian composers who believed in the development of a Russian nationalistic style of composition. Although a huge respect for Western music existed in Russia in the Romantic era, these composers created a unique Russian art music by finding inspiration in folksongs, fairy tales and the use of exoticism melodically, rhythmically and harmonically.
